We visited your beautiful garden yesterday and loved it! Your knowledge and willingness to share is a rare treat.Once again you gave me hope that my tree peony will flower next year. We have been coming from Rhode Island for 4 years and enjoy the laid-back relaxed stroll among the beautiful peonies.
Thanks for all you do to make this Spring event a treasure.
Thank you for your continued support. I’m sure with all the attention you have given your tree peony it will start blooming well next year.
Beautiful! How do you stake or cage them, I dislike the typical rings sold for Peonys. They need to develop something better. Need to make a trip to visit, love Peony Plants! Cathy Testa
Hi Cathy,
We specialize in tree peonies, which have study woody stems and never require staking. For our herbaceous peonies, we thy to weed out cultivars with weak stems. Battle Hill Forge in Millterton, NY sells some nice peony rings. You can see their catalog here. http://www.battlehillforge.com/retailcatalog/BATTLE-HILL-FORGE-retail-catalog-1-17-13
I enjoyed seeing all the pictures of your peonies. Here a picture of the first flower on my new plant I planted last fall. Lucille Schacht
Floral Rivalry was absolutely gorgeous this spring. Bigger and more beautiful than last spring. However, new growth is coming out from the bottom and the leaves look like a herbaceous peony. Is that possible? Shall I cut them? Will it weaken the Japanese tree peony? Will appreciate a reply. Thanks.
Yes, you should remove the sucking herbaceous stems. In the fall you can try to remove the graft root if it looks as if the tree peony has grown its own roots or simply mound up more soil around the base of the plant to discourage the graft root from re-sprouting. See my post on this https://crickethillgarden.wordpress.com/2012/09/11/herbaceous-understock-sprouting-on-tree-peonies-part-ii-removal/
It is now January and I am wondering if I can plant my hard black tree peony seeds in the greenhouse and then plant out if they germinate? I know from your very helpful article that I have to use a file to get through the seed before planting.
Many thanks for your lovely article it has really cheered me up on this miserable January day in Burford in the Cotswolds UK.
